Knit the 1×1 Rib Stitch Border for Your Beanie
Here, we’ll knit a simple 1×1 rib stitch border, and the pattern is provided below.
Row 1(RS)- P1, * K1, P1 * repeat from * to * ………………. last sts P1
Row 2(WS)- Same as row 1
Repeat these two rows to complete a 1-inch border. I knitted a total of 11 rows for the border.
Knit a Sunayana Lace Beanie: A Step-by-Step Guide
This beanie uses a four-row lace pattern that begins from the wrong side. The pattern is based on a 7-stitch repeat, so you’ll need stitches in multiples of 7. Additionally, you’ll need 2 extra stitches for the edge.
The extra stitches will be used for sewing the beanie, as it has been knitted straight. I’ve provided the pattern below, showing how the design is adjusted for the beanie.
Row 1(WS)- P1, * K2, P5 * repeat from * to * ………………….. last sts P1
Row 2 (RS)- P1, * K2tog, Yo, K1, Yo, SSK, P2 * repeat from * to * ……………………………. last sts P1
Row 3(WS)- Same as row 1
Row 4(RS)- P1, * P2, K5 * repeat from * to * …………… last sts P1
Repeat these four rows to complete the length of the beanie. I have knitted a total of 8.5 inches (1-inch border + 7.5-inch body).
Decreasing Stitches for Shaping the Beanie
Once the beanie reaches the desired length, we’ll start shaping it by decreasing or binding off the stitches. The beanie will be bound off in just six rows, so make sure to adjust the length accordingly.
These six rows will add approximately half an inch to the beanie’s length. The stitches will be bound off following the lace pattern. I’ve shared the bind-off pattern below.
Row 1(RS)- P1, * K2tog, K1, SSK, P2 * repeat from * to * ……………last sts P1
Now I have a total of 82 stitches remaining.
Row 2(WS)- P1, * K2, P3 * repeat from * to * …………… last sts P1
Row 3 (RS)- P1, * K3, P2tog * repeat from * to * …………last sts P1
Now I have a total of 66 stitches remaining.
Row 4 (WS)- P1, * K1, P3 * repeat from * to * …………last sts P1
Row 5 (RS)- P1, * K3tog ( SL2tog, K1, both slip sts over the knit sts ), P1 * repeat from * to * ……last sts P1
Now I have a total of 34 stitches remaining.
Row 6 (WS)- P1, * K1, P1 * repeat from * to * …………last sts P1
Pick up the remaining 34 stitches on a darning needle and secure them tightly. Then, sew the beanie to finish.
